Blogging Block

I tried hard to come up with a very clever Halloween post. One that would cause you to gasp, howl, faint or at least double over with laughter. Or even a chuckle. But it just didn't happen. So here I sit, trying to think of something...

Happy Halloween everyone!

Makeover

Barr Blog was begging for a new look. Not knowing which fashion statement to make, the seasonal motif won out. The header picture is a painting by North Carolina artist Bob Timberlake. It is titled "Best Friends". I hope I am not breaking any copyright laws by using his work. I really don't think he'll mind.

We are enjoying some wonderful fall weather right now. Pumpkins are displayed on porches, the trees are showing off their bright reds and golds and, much to the dislike of my ears, the leaf blowers are coming out of hiding. On my afternoon walk today, my feet were crunching the fallen acorns. I stopped to pick one up. What cute little things they are - oak nuts wearing hats.

The Coolpix camera is going to get a work out tomorrow - there are still some features I've not yet tried out. This time of year is picture perfect.

The Day I Was Born

Setting: Maternity ward - a hospital in Detroit

Time: A few years ago (Harry Truman was President)

Overheard: a conversation between Stan and Ro

Mom: Oh, Stan, look, we have another baby girl. But she doesn't look like Chrissie, does she?

Dad: No not at all. What's wrong with her hair, Ro? It's so straight. Like hundreds of tiny arrows.

Mom: Yes, I see what you mean. I will give her a perm as soon as we get home. Have we decided on a name yet?

Dad: I like the name Marjorie and we can call her Marge.

Mom: No, I like the name Margaret. We can call her Maggie.

Dad: Oh, I like the name Peggy, too. That's what we'll call her.

Mom: I said Maggie, not Peggy! But wait, Peggy Lee is a talented singer. Maybe if we name her Peggy she will become a famous singer.

Dad: Yes, a famous singer! "Fever" is my favorite song and Peggy Lee has made it a hit. Our little Peggy will become a famous singer.

Mom: Or better yet, she will become a human resources assistant for a cafeteria chain in North Carolina. This baby loves to eat. She will love working for a multi-state retail food establishment.

Dad: Whatever. I should go now. Tom, Jerry and Chrissie are waiting in the car. I promised them a special lunch - cream chipped beef on toast.

Mom: Oh, that's their favorite. Come back here tomorrow and take us home. The older ones are anxious to start taking care of baby Peggy.

Dad: By the way, are we going to have any more kids?

Mom: That depends. If baby Peggy is a good child, then we will have one more.

A Wonderful Long Weekend

We traveled to Virginia this weekend to attend the baptism of little Emerson Maxwell. Rita and Brian are so proud of their son as well they should be. He is so precious. The baptism ceremony was wonderful. Afterwards we enjoyed a delicious brunch at their home. Three years ago we were at this same church for their wedding.

Tom and I are always glad to see each other. He and Linda are great fun. We always have a good time when we're together.

While touring downtown DC, Tim gets a photo op with some candidates.

Saturday night we dined at a delicious restaurant in China Town. This part of the city is so pretty at night.

Another evening we were atop the Jefferson Memorial at sunset. Love my new camera!

Of course the Lincoln Memorial is breathtaking too.

The Washington Monument in the background.

We toured The White House Friday morning. President Bush had just given a press conference in the Rose Garden and we saw his helicopter, Marine One, take off. We also noticed the security guard with a machine gun. Because of strict security measures no cameras were allowed; no purses, bags or any such carry items. The last time we toured was March 2001, pre-9/11.

I could tour DC for weeks and never tire of it. If only my legs and feet felt the same way.

Celebration

*
Happy Birthday to my little sis.
***
From the time that we were little,
I knew you'd always be
Not just a loving sister
But a caring friend to me
*
We told each other secrets;
We giggled and we cried,
We shared our joys and sorrows--
We were always side by side.
*
We have a very special bond;
I knew it from the start.
You'll have my love forever--
We're sisters, heart to heart.

Fair--Part 2

Peggy and I didn't plan these posts together. I guess this is what happens when you are soul sisters.
Mel, Missy and I went to the Texas State Fair today. As I noted in a past post we had tickets to the Dallas Summer Musicals...the last one being The Color Purple...today. Your ticket gained entrance to the fair and so we ventured forth in the early a.m.

Here is our great State Fair icon, Big Tex, to greet all.
Now on to the food section...mostly fried...
guess which won out...
see last picture

Fair

The annual Dixie Classic Fair opened this weekend. Since we have not been in several years we decided to take advantage of the gorgeous weather and head on over to the fairgrounds.

The standard fair rides were as popular as ever.

A prize hen glares at me. I think she just wants to go home.

The winning pumpkin.
I wonder how they transported this.

And of course the food selection. Here's an entree.

And lots of choices for desert. Decisions, decisions.

Can you still play it?

If you're tired of x-box, video games or Wii, try this.

If you need help, as I did, look here.

What a Treat

I've just finished one of these fabulous donuts with a cup of coffee and my body is in sugar heaven. I've never been a big fan of donuts...oh, occasionally I might eat one but many more times will pass them up. Then on a trip to Krispy Kreme with Jacob and Josh last fall after story time, I discovered these wonderful creations. Add a cup of coffee and I'm in 7th heaven.
I know, I know...the caloric count is unbelievable but for something this good, it's worth it. They're not around all year and I don't go up there daily so I'm not feeling guilty. And I did do the elliptical for 40 minutes this morning so I think it's all a wash. If you have a store in your vicinity, I highly recommend you try one of these Pumpkin Spice Cake donuts. If you find something better, let me know.
