The Day I Was Born

Setting: Maternity ward - a hospital in Detroit

Time: A few years ago (Harry Truman was President)

Overheard: a conversation between Stan and Ro

Mom: Oh, Stan, look, we have another baby girl. But she doesn't look like Chrissie, does she?

Dad: No not at all. What's wrong with her hair, Ro? It's so straight. Like hundreds of tiny arrows.

Mom: Yes, I see what you mean. I will give her a perm as soon as we get home. Have we decided on a name yet?

Dad: I like the name Marjorie and we can call her Marge.

Mom: No, I like the name Margaret. We can call her Maggie.

Dad: Oh, I like the name Peggy, too. That's what we'll call her.

Mom: I said Maggie, not Peggy! But wait, Peggy Lee is a talented singer. Maybe if we name her Peggy she will become a famous singer.

Dad: Yes, a famous singer! "Fever" is my favorite song and Peggy Lee has made it a hit. Our little Peggy will become a famous singer.

Mom: Or better yet, she will become a human resources assistant for a cafeteria chain in North Carolina. This baby loves to eat. She will love working for a multi-state retail food establishment.

Dad: Whatever. I should go now. Tom, Jerry and Chrissie are waiting in the car. I promised them a special lunch - cream chipped beef on toast.

Mom: Oh, that's their favorite. Come back here tomorrow and take us home. The older ones are anxious to start taking care of baby Peggy.

Dad: By the way, are we going to have any more kids?

Mom: That depends. If baby Peggy is a good child, then we will have one more.

And care for Peggy we did...our chores chart read: 1.dry dishes,
2.take out the trash, 3.watch Peggy.
I think if we were really good, beside the chipped beef we would get hash!
