I'm in the cafeteria line for lunch. As I slowly move along as the line is moving, a man is very close (too close) behind me, breathing down my neck. I inch up a bit - the man inches up - ever so close. Even though my back is to him, I can feel the closeness. And then it happens. I walk one step and stop. He walks two steps and bumps into my back. He says nothing. A simple "oh, 'scuse me" would be nice.
A few weeks ago a lady behind me in the lunch line was so darn close that when she let out a big sigh, her breath blew the back of my hair. Had this been George Clooney it would not have been a problem. But, to her credit, she realized what she had done and did apologize. Apologies really work with me.
Sunday I was in the check out line at A. C. Moore. When I reached the cashier, the lady behind me was so close I could not even swipe my card in the card reader. I wondered if she was trying to read my credit card number. So I gently backed myself up a bit forcing her to do the same. She was still situated nice and close however.
And now today, at lunch, I went shopping and was standing in line for the cashier. The lady behind me had a cart with which she promptly bumped me. I turned around, carefully put my hand on the end of the cart and pushed it gently towards her forcing her to move back. She then moved the cart forward once again almost touching me. I repeated my gesture, moved her cart back and this time made eye contact. She got the idea and stayed put. What's funny about this encounter is neither one of us ever said a word. But this is the picture I had in my mind of how this could have turned out.

I am looking for a t-shirt with wording on the back that goes something like this "IF YOU CAN READ THIS YOU ARE STANDING TOO CLOSE. THANK YOU FOR MOVING BACK"

Peggy,
It sounds like internet shopping will solve this "closeness" phobia. Then, the only one you have to worry about is Tim looking over your shoulder.
I agree Jerry, shopping on line is so much better. Even our grocery stores have on-line ordering that you can pick up later - for a fee of course. I should try that since I tend to get annoyed at grocery stores too. Gosh, I must be turning into a shrew!
I shop for holidays entirely online. Not only are there too many "mall rats" in the mall, but you also have to deal with sales clerks who are completely oblivious to the stock... no clue as to what they sell or where any particular item might be located. What happened to customer service? Rhetorical question, I know!
Jane, who spends her money out of state at LL Bean and Levi's.com every holiday season!!
